Stewardship
To the Members of Chapel of St. John the Divine
Dear Friends,
This is the season of STEWARDSHIP.
If you look up the word "Stewardship" in the dictionary you'll
see that it refers to the servant in a prosperous household who sees to
it that the wishes of the head of the household are properly carried out.
We are stewards of God's household on earth, one small room of which
is our parish church of St. John's. As such it is our calling to see to
it that God's purposes are carried out here.
That's what we do when we gather to worship God in prayer and music,
when we reach beyond ourselves to feed the hungry, when we welcome the
stranger, when we study God's holy word and seek to teach it, when we
offer comfort to the troubled and the ailing. All of that fulfills God's
purposes, makes us proper stewards.
Each of those acts of stewardship is made possible by the steady supply
of the money you pledge and provide each year. Without that supply, our
efforts to carry out God's great purposes will fail.
As you consider your pledge to St. John's this year, remember that you
are a Steward of its life, someone called to see to it that God's purposes
are fulfilled through your parish church of St. John the Divine.
Ever faithfully,
+Hays Rockwell
